WE ARE SMHR

SMHR saw a huge need for a horse rescue in Northwest Arkansas in 2015 and started the application process for our 501c3 which was awarded to SMHR in early 2016. Since then, SMHR has been growing in numbers each year rescuing, rehabbing, retraining, and rehoming owner surrenders, sheriff seizures, abandoned and slaughter bound horses. SMHR has been progressive in our training programs. We are moving toward more education for the horses to make sure they are set up for the rest of their lives!

Owners Jessica & Holly Shepherd have been rescuing horses since before 2016, when they officially established SMHR. They are joined by several team members who play huge roles in the day-to-day operations of the rescue. The success stories of each horse who have trotted through would not be possible without the support of volunteers, online followers, donators, and on-site staff members!

"I'm Jessica Shepherd, and horses have been woven into the fabric of my life since I was a child. The gentle rhythm of their hooves, the soft nuzzle of their velvety noses, the quiet strength in their eyes—horses have always held a special place in my heart. That's why, in 2015, I founded Shepherd Mountain Horse Rescue, a sanctuary where neglected and abandoned equines can find refuge, healing, and a second chance at life. My journey with horses has been a lifelong adventure. From riding and showing to competing and training, I've immersed myself in their world, gaining invaluable experience and a deep understanding of their unique needs. But my true passion lies in sharing the magic of horses with others, educating the public about their beauty, intelligence, and gentle spirits. At Shepherd Mountain, we don't just provide shelter and sustenance; we offer a holistic approach to healing, both physical and emotional. Each horse receives individualized care, tailored to their specific needs. We work tirelessly to rehabilitate them, providing veterinary care, nutritional support, and gentle training to prepare them for their forever homes. Witnessing their transformation, from timid and broken to confident and thriving, is the greatest reward. When I'm not at the rescue, you'll still find me surrounded by the beauty of nature, enjoying quality time with my loved ones, our dogs, and, of course, my beloved horses. Whether it's a peaceful trail ride or simply sharing a quiet moment in their presence, horses continue to fill my life with joy and purpose. Shepherd Mountain Horse Rescue is more than just a place; it's a testament to the enduring bond between humans and horses and my unwavering commitment to their well-being.”

Hi, I’m Jessica Shepherd!

Owner / Founder

"My name is Holly Shepherd, I am the co-owner of SMHR. I am also the resident farrier for SMHR horse on basic trims and shoes. I work part time in the financial industry and part-time in the neuro-diagnostics industry. I have 11 years of experience in the equine industry and with equine rescue, I love every part of it even though some of the aspects of rescue are very hard. It is the one good ride on a rescue or one good rehab or the one “perfect” home that makes it all worth it! During my free time, I enjoy horseback riding, kayaking, jeeping, hiking, swimming, playing with our dogs and spending time with my close friends and family."

"I am Shane Grayling, and I oversee all the online engagement for SMHR. At a young age I realized my love for horses, growing up with them. My dream has always been to have horses of my own and be a part of something bigger within the horse community. Being a part of SMHR since 2021 has not only brought me closer to dreams and also made me aware of all the horses in need across the US. I am continuing my skills of riding and training and the day to day at SMHR. I currently work as a CSM at Home Depot. I enjoy being outside, horseback riding and hunting."

"My name is Madia Smith, I am a mother of three children and the wife of a wonderful husband Paul Smith. I have always loved animals from a very young age. My strong passion has always been horses. I have always loved riding and learning about them. My mom was a huge equine lover her whole life. She got me into horses as a 3-year-old. Let’s just say it was the start of something I’ve never lost interest in.

I was so excited when I got the opportunity to join SMHR. I have learned a huge amount of training and care for horses. I enjoy riding and spending time with the horses. I have all kinds of other passions, but horses are and always will be part of me. I am the youngest of 9 other siblings we all loved riding as kids. I am the only one that still has horses."

"I began my journey with Shepherd Mountain in 2016. I had been in Mountainburg for only a short time after relocating from the Chicago suburbs. In the beginning it was like an extended vacation. I'm retired and spent my days getting to know my new residence, exploring and being creative. But soon, I realized I needed more.

One day I happened to notice the Shepherd Mountain sign and knew exactly what I wanted to do! It took some convincing, (quite a bit actually), but eventually Jessica got tired of my pestering and decided to take a chance on me. I started out moving wood piles and kicking poop. Then came watering horses, feeding, leading, and catching horses (this was a challenge)! I grew up one of those girls who begged for a pony every Christmas. Needless to say, that never happened.

Where does my affection for horses come from? They are majestic and spiritual. One look in their eyes and you're hooked! The smells, the whinny, neighs and brays. The sound of their hooves, the breeze as they fly by. Spending time grooming, the feeling when they lean in me. All healing for my heart, my mind, my soul. Thank you, Shepherd Mountain, for taking a chance on me. I sincerely love and appreciate you from the bottom of my heart."

"My name is Gabby Long. I am a sophomore at AR Tech University and member of the Tech Rodeo Team. I started taking riding lessons and riding horses in 2018 where I have gone on to compete in multiple barrel races and in Jr. Rodeos. I currently have two horses of my own; Gracie, my senior barrel mare, and Gretchen, my coming 3-year-old mare. I also am teaching my little sister and cousin on caring and riding their own pony.

"I joined the SMHR team in April of 2024 a week after I adopted Gretchen. I am so honored to be able to work for SMHR and to be given the opportunity to advance my knowledge and skills from such amazing people. To be able to help these beautiful animals and at the same time gain valuable knowledge on the care, health, and training of horses is such a blessing."

"I’m Payton, an 18-year-old who is in love with horses. I recently just had my first kid, a daughter named Sterling Ann. I barrel race and helped Jessica keep the rescue going for a while before I had to take off to bake my precious baby. SMHR is the best rescue I've ever seen. The love and care we have for these horses who have never received it is the best thing to watch as they get closer with us!"

“I've been dedicated to volunteering with SMHR since 2016, where I've found immense fulfillment. Passionate about horse riding and continuously expanding my knowledge, I find joy in learning new things every day. My primary focus lies in the nutrition and refeeding program for rescue horses, as I believe in their rehabilitation and well-being. I love learning more from the ground up to riding the rescue horses, evaluating their abilities, and finding their perfect placement. As a mother of three lovely little girls, I cherish the moments when they join me in volunteering, instilling in them the values of compassion and service to animals in need.”

"My passion for horses started at a very young age. I always had friends or neighbors growing up who owned horses, and that is where I got my start. I currently ride for the Rodeo of the Ozarks Rounders equestrian drill team, a group of high-speed precision riders who do a routine to music at rodeos. I love hearing the crowd and feeling my horse's heartbeat of excitement through the saddle. Something that once started as a dream became hobby, and then somewhere along the way turned into what keeps my heart beating!

I served as a volunteer at SMHR for a few months and loved every second of it. The atmosphere of working with horses and people who share the same passions is only something you can experience to explain. I learned a lot about rehabilitation and training that I will always be grateful for. Putting the horse first in every situation, most importantly, is what I learned to hold steadfast to!

When I am not riding horses or at a rodeo, I am an interior designer, graphic & web designer, and professional wedding photographer."
